Hip Replacement Recovery and Physiotherapy

Recovery looks different for every patient. The Lincolnshire Hip Clinic pathway includes unlimited post-op physiotherapy in Grantham or Sleaford, with ongoing follow-up from Professor Paul Lee.

Recovery is individual

The information on this page describes how recovery is typically structured at Lincolnshire Hip Clinic. Your own recovery timeline, any temporary restrictions and your return to driving, work or sport will depend on your procedure, your medical history, your pain control, your strength, your confidence and your surgeon’s advice.

Your suitability, surgical approach and recovery plan are confirmed at consultation, not on a marketing page.

How recovery is structured

From hospital to local follow-up

  1. Hospital stay

You stay overnight at the 5-star Weymouth Street Hospital. The inpatient physiotherapy team helps you start mobilising while you are in hospital.

  2. First days at home

For eligible UK patients, you are driven home by a private luxury car service after discharge. The first few days at home focus on rest, mobility around the house and gentle exercises.

  3. Local post-op physiotherapy

Your physio plan is delivered at our Grantham or Sleaford clinics. Sessions are unlimited and continue for as long as your recovery needs.

  4. Follow-up reviews

Professor Lee reviews your progress alongside your physiotherapy. Your plan is adjusted to match how you are recovering.

Common recovery questions

When can I get back to daily life?

The questions below come up at almost every consultation. The honest answer is the same in each case: it depends on you, your procedure and your surgeon’s advice. These short answers give a general sense; your individual plan is confirmed with Professor Lee.

How long until I can walk after hip replacement?

Most patients begin gentle, supported mobilisation soon after surgery, with the inpatient physiotherapy team. The pace at which you progress to walking independently depends on your procedure, your pain control, your strength and your physiotherapist’s guidance.

When can I drive after hip replacement?

Returning to driving depends on your procedure, your recovery, your medication, your reaction times and your surgeon’s advice. Professor Lee will give you specific guidance based on your individual circumstances.

When can I return to work?

Return to work depends on the type of work you do, how your recovery is progressing and your clinical review. Sedentary work is often resumed sooner than physically demanding work. Your plan is discussed with you individually.

When can I sleep on my side?

Sleep position guidance after hip replacement depends on your surgical approach and your recovery. Your surgical team and physiotherapist give you specific advice before you go home.

How long does full recovery take?

Recovery is highly individual. Many patients see steady progress over weeks and months, but the timeline depends on your procedure, your overall health, your strength and confidence, and how closely you follow your physiotherapy plan.

When to contact your surgical team

Most recoveries proceed without incident, but some symptoms after hip replacement need urgent review. Contact your surgical team or seek medical help if you experience:

  • New or worsening severe pain in your hip, thigh or calf
  • Fever, chills or signs of infection at the wound site
  • Sudden swelling in the calf, shortness of breath or chest pain
  • New numbness, weakness or loss of function in the leg
  • Any concern that does not feel right

For anything urgent, please call NHS 111 or 999 as appropriate, or attend your nearest A&E. This page does not replace clinical advice.
